Isi artikelRadiotherapy is one of the main treatment option in the management of cancer. Together with other modalities such as surgery and chemotherapy, radiotherapy plays an important role in the treatment of the most patients who are cured of their cancer. In Indonesia, prevalence of cancer is reported to be 4.3 in thousand population, with new cancer cases are nearly 300 thousand per year. This study has attempted to refine the current status of radiotherapy services in Indonesia and assessed the need of services. Based on information obtained from the Indonesian Radiation Oncology Society, it was revealed that the number of radiotherapy services in Indonesia are increasing from 16 centers in 2004 to 30 centers in 2015, even though that numbers are still far from ideal for Indonesia as a big country with huge population. The GLOBOCAN 2012 databases were used to assess the needs for radiotherapy services in Indonesia. The assessment showed that by assuming 1 oncologist is needed for 250 cancer patients per year, and annual number of radiotherapy courses is around 185402, Indonesia needs around 740 radiation oncologists to treat cancer patients in 2015. With the existing number of oncologists of 70 and only five oncologists produced per year through the oncologist specialist education in Faculty of Medicine University of Indonesia/Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, it takes many years to meet the need of oncologists for the whole Indonesia. There are still much efforts, therefore, still have to be done to treat cancer patients in Indonesia, both in terms of humanresources and equipment in order to meet the demand in the course of radiotherapy services.
