The emergence of situation semantics has been a notable cross-disciplinary event. The theory was developed by a philosopher and a mathematician in the tradition of the analytic philosophy of language. Many of its most enthusiastic advocates have been natural language researchers in artificial intelligence. This commentary explores the reasons for this enthusiasm, the limitations of the theory as seen from an AI perspective, and the significance it is likely to have for computational theory and practice.
