The purpose of this paper is to discuss the application of relational governance in family SMEs in Indonesia. Relational governance believes that people behavior can be controlled by social elements that result from social interaction. This study investigated several factors that influence relational governance in family SMEs in Indonesia. The data collection was obtained through face to face interview with owner-managers of 350 family firms in Indonesia. Research has been conducted in seven district in two provinces in Indonesia: Central Java and Jogjakarta. This study used factor analysis to validate the construct and hierarchichal regression to examine the hypothesis. The result indicates that when asset specificity and uncertainty exist in transactions, family firms considered relational governance such as information sharing, joint planning and joint problem solving in inter-firm relationships. Overall, this study provides evidence that even though institutional legal system is growing up in Indonesian, the role relational ties are still significant to govern business exchange.
