Tata Steel has pioneered many new practices / innovations successfully among the manufacturing industries. Continuing the tradition, during recent up-gradation of C blast furnace a pair of non drainable troughs with bends was designed for handling liquid metal and slag. To divert the dry slag, in case of granulation system not being available, no dry pit or separate runners could be designed due to space constraint. Therefore a unique idea was adopted to use the same metal runner to handle the slag as and when required. The bend trough and common runners are unique design concepts and no other reference is available anywhere in the world. A bend trough has vulnerability of frequent refractory erosion at its bend thereby limiting the campaign life of the trough. The slope of a metal runner and slag runner are different and therefore handling both in the same runner was possible only if a suitable slope is agreed. Simultaneously the erosion pattern of metal runners changes while handling slag in it due to presence of chemically active elements like SiO2 and CaO in the slag. Any premature failure of trough or runner and subsequent spillages of metal could be a serious safety hazard besides limiting the productivity of the furnace. All these concerns were meticulously resolved in the design phase after rounds of detail study with suppliers and refractory experts. After the blowing in, many a new practices of cast house management evolved to suit the conditional requirements. Currently C BF operates with two tap hole operation and a campaign life of 90,000 t plus has already been achieved for the troughs.
