Market potential for compounded engineering plastics is attractive in Europe/US. To grab this business opportunity, engineering plastics offered by SRF should be on par with the best global players. The emerging automobile market in India presented opportunity for the Indian plastics raw material manufacturers to be part of the supply chain to the OEMs provided their products meet the stringent requirements of applications such as ‘Under the hood’ components. Bench Mark studies against global players revealed a necessity to enhance mechanical properties of SRF material vis-à-vis the competitive grades. Decades ofexperience in manufacturing N6 reinforced compounded grades and technical literature survey by the cross functional team helped narrow down the probable factors that might influence mechanical properties. Using design of experiments, process conditions were optimized for getting enhanced properties. Validation trials revealed significant improvement in the mechanical properties of SRF grade on par with leading global manufacturers. Process conditions were then standardized and SRF is now ready to enter auto OEMs and also export.
