The Indian higher education system is complex by its nature and operations and grabbles with issues of access, lack of infrastructure, large number of institutions with small number of students (financial non-viability), student diversity, digital divide, shortage of funds, faculty shortage, outdated curriculum and teaching practices etc., The natural trade off which occurs to accommodate and manage with diverse constrains results in poor quality of education in large number of institutions. The accreditation process and the concept of internal quality assurance mechanism is being used from the past 16 years to address the issue of quality enhancement and sustenance in the Indian higher education system. The paper provides the background of higher education system in India in brief and dwells upon the factors relating to quality assurance and its mechanism.
