Isi artikelGenerally, every industrial product has more than one quality characteristics and those characteristics may be correlated. Quality improvement actions will be taken if these multivariate manufacturing processes are not capable of meeting specifications. In addition to use multivariate process capability indices for measuring the process performance, quality engineers may quantify the impact of likelihood of failures/defects in terms of expected quality loss in order to emphasize the urgency of the improvement project to the senior management. The purpose of this research is to explore the relationship between multivariate process capability indices and loss functions for the nominal-the-better and the-smaller-the better cases so the likelihood and consequence resulting from the failure of a manufacturing process or an environmental system can be evaluated simultaneously. Given the multivariate process capability indices, we show that the expected quality losses can be estimated by the relationship equations and the new multivariate process capability indices can properly reflect the actual defect rate. Finally, a numerical example is given to demonstrate how the manufacturing risk can be assessed by linking the multivariate process capability indices and multivariate loss function. The new method gives quality practitioners a concrete tool in making quantitative decision when conducting risk assessment for any multivariate process or environmental system.
