The loan underwriting process was re-engineered and transformed to reduce processing cost of files. This transformation involved series of changes covering re-engineering the flow of process based on cost involved at each step and associated wastages, reduction of waste, re-organization of credit processing units and innovations like implementation of bar-coding system. The methodology used for improvement was lean fundamentals clubbed with simulations. This initiative resulted in substantial reduction of credit cost per file, improvement in service levels, less space required for processing and reduction in manpower required. To sustain the results, the improvements were incorporated in the quality management system.
