Irrespective of size of organization whether it is micro, small, medium or large every company has to be globally competitive to remain in the business. Incidentally Lean Manufacturing is now globally recognized as one of the most effective methodologies to enhance competitiveness of the products being produced and delivered by manufacturing organizations. Being quite different from other TQM methodologies, it is not well known to most of the organization of India as well as other developing countries. Realizing the power and importance of Lean, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises has taken an innovative initiative to use Lean Manufacturing, not only as a global competitiveness enhancement tool but as a socio-economic development methodology to enhance employment opportunities by improving the performance of SME units across the country. This is being done through a unique Lean Manufacturing Competitiveness Scheme launched by Government of India. This paper highlights the real approach of how Lean Concepts, Tools & Techniques, which were developed by one of the largest companies of the world- Toyota Motor Corporation Japan, has been simplified and translated to make it applicable for Small & Medium Enterprises of India, who not even heard the word “Lean”. Through this paper author has tried to share experiences of developing a unique Lean Strategy and implementation methodology for successful implementation of Lean in a cluster of Indian SMEs along with a true case study.
