Isi artikelThe importance of religion at the aggregate economic level and corporate financial level has been well established. In contrast, a few literatures have investigated the influences of religion on financial decision-making process at individual level. Under current materialistic society, individual’s happiness and success are bonded to the level of consumption and material acquisition. In financial behavior context, materialism leads to lower individual financial satisfaction and creates financial problem. Hence, increasing personal income and possessing more material may not be an absolute answer to increase financial well-being of individual. Base on previous literature, Buddhism has presented direct effect to reduce materialism level. In consequence, this study aims to explore the effect of Buddhist Philosophy on personal financial well-being via “The Four Immeasurables” which are the four basic philosophies that Buddhists should pursue. The empirical results from 373 international Buddhist respondents show that “The Four Immeasurables” (1) increases personal financial well-being (2) reduces compulsive buying behavior (3) reduces financial risk management (4) increases prudential wealth management behavior and (5) shows the positive effect rather than negative effect as proposed hypothesis, although “The Four Immeasurables” has significant relationship with financial desire discrepancy. Keywords: Buddhist philosophy, The Four Immeasurables, Financial well-being, Financial satisfaction, Financial behavior, Compulsive buying behavior, Prudent wealth management behavior, Financial risk tolerance, Financial desire discrepancy, Personal financial ethic.
