Isi artikelThe paper aims to examine the changes in inequality in Laos during the period of rapid FDI inflow, in particular between 2002/03 and 2007/08. The paper finds that inequality both in consumption and asset increase in this period of rapid economic growth. With-in group inequality continues to be the major source of consumption inequality while between-group inequality becomes a major source of asset inequality. Asset inequality is higher and increases more rapidly in Laos. The paper argues that FDI is good for growth but the unevenness of FDI distribution contributes to an increase in inequality in Laos. The paper also finds that accessibility and the size of economy are important in explaining inequality in Laos. Although, the paper asserts that growth-inequality relationship in Laos is moving along the Kuznets curve, the inequality problem should not be neglected in the development agenda of Laos. The paper proposes both region specific and broad-based policies to deal with inequality in Laos.
