America has been in constant state of war for the last fifty years. American people had been told that the wars are necessary to make country safer and it is easier to defeat enemies in their own turf instead of fighting them in our country. But the survey conducted by Gallup.com (Jones, 2010) shows that more and more Americans are now questioning, “Why are we still fighting war on foreign soil?” More and more people think there was a mistake in sending military forces to Afghanistan (Jones, 2010) and it did not made us any safer instead it is a big drain on tax payers. One of the famous business pundits named Paul Farrell once wrote during Iraq War, “America's economy is a war economy. Not a manufacturing economy. Not an agricultural economy. Nor a service economy. Not even a consumer economy. Deep inside we love war. We want war. Need it. Relish it. Thrive on war. War is in our genes, deep in our DNA. War excites our economic brain. War drives our entrepreneurial spirit. War thrills the American soul. Oh just admit it, we have a love affair with war.” As can be seen from Fig. 1, there seems to be a direct relationship between the state of war and the defense spending, especially after year 2000 one can notice that as US got involved in Iraq war and war in Afghanistan, military spending soared to new record highs. In this research study, we investigate whether the amount of wars the US is involved in makes us any safer or such wars are needed for the growth of our economy and whether there is a singular profiteering built off on the backs of our men and women in uniform. The industriousness of the United States post World War II truly pushed the average American worker to a new level of success while growing the economy at record paces (Rumelt, 2011) Does having troops overseas benefit the country as a whole, certain industries, the economy itself, or is the positive effect not able to be captured through health and economic measures? This research focuses on measuring the defense spending against economic indicators as well as against multiple statistical parameters that denote the health of the country overall to explore the relationships between them.
