Isi artikelObjective: There is a large scale capacity under utilization in SMEs in India. The chemical industry has been the worst sufferer owing to multifaceted problems in this segment. This study was undertaken to explore the reasons for under capacity utilization amongst small-scale chemical industries with special reference to Mumbai Region. Methodology: Set of questionnaires are sent to target industry to collect first hand information on the problems being faced by them, which is limiting their capacity utilization to fullest extent. Personal interviews were conducted with key personnel of target industry. The target industries were small-scale chemical industry. The data collected is analyzed with the help of statistical techniques such as Multiple regressions and chi square test. Findings: The study helped in understanding the various constraints being faced by the entrepreneurs in these segments, which are limiting their capacity utilization. The importance of key indicators such as market share, turn over, spiraling raw material prices and their non-availability, number of years of establishment and the product life-cycle over production capacity utilization was studied. The study also outlines various managerial constraints being faced by these firms and its impact on their capacity utilization. Practical Implications: The outcome of the study would be useful for the industry under survey as well as for policy makers concerning small-scale industry.
