Isi artikelThat the concept of pain in English is not universal and culturally bounded, and yet it has not been made clear to second language learners. Learners are usually taught different expressions to talk about pain, however the meanings remain obscure. Problems arise when they think about a certain kind of pain that has no equivalence in English or when they simply do not know which expression to use. As a result, when they try to tell people about their pain or look for medical care in an English speaking country, miscommunication occurs and the costs are immense. Explicit information about the concept of pain in English is therefore of paramount importance. Using a natural semantic metalanguage technique, Wierzbicka (2012) presented explications that allow us to see the underlying semantics of phrases to talk about pain, such as in pain, it hurts, ache, and sore. This paper is aimed at addressing the crosslinguistic problems that Indonesian learners encounter when describing pain in English by providing an overview of the explications and proposing ideas for developing learning activities. It is expected that this paper could be useful for English teachers to instruct their language learners about the concept meaningfully and hence assist them to describe pain properly in English.
