In the English Language, prepositions are considered one of the language features that is the most difficult for second language learners to acquire. For Indonesian EFL learners, the prepositions in, on, and at may cause difficulties particularly due to the polysemous nature of prepositions and negative learning transfer from the learners’ first language. As an emerging field of study, cognitive linguistics offers a new perspective on the teaching and learning of prepositions. This paper reports a study that examines the effects of cognitive linguistics on the teaching of the prepositions in, on, and at on 35 tenth grade senior high school students in Jakarta. The study used a one group pre-test post-test design. Statistical analysis finds that between the pre-test and the post-test, the participants gained a significant amount of score (p value = .033). An individual analysis on each of the senses was also conducted. No significant score gain took place in the spatial sense. However, in the temporal and abstract senses, the participants experienced a significant gain of scores. This result showed that cognitive linguistics was able to improve the participants’ ability to use the prepositions in, on, and at significantly as a whole, and especially in their ability to use the prepositions in their temporal and abstract senses.
