The use of literary work in foreign language teaching has been considered as one of the prerequisite in sociolinguistic element in EFL setting. This is because in foreign context the use of written media or literary reading text showing the cultural aspects of native speaker is the only means for students to access the sociolinguistic aspect. Quite different from those who can travel abroad the direct contact that the learners have with native speakers might be one of the sources to introduce the learners to sociolinguistic aspects however, for foreign language learners the use of literary work might be useful to serve the above purpose. However the introduction of literary work in language teaching is not without problem, there are some possible problems that the students have when they start learning using literary work in their EFL. Firstly is the concept of learning language as communication has usually prevented the teacher or the learner to seriously learn the literary content seriously. Thus the use of literary work if this is done will never be explained thoroughly or will just be the one to be the point of simple chat to improve the students’ communicative ability. The other serious and not less important is the way local teacher explains the material is also still a big hurdle to overcome, especially for those who are not really qualified introducing literary work will mean difficult and exhaustive effort to make the students sit quietly to understand its message hidden inside the book. Not to mention the huge class attendance is also a big problem for those who teach literary work, this is because most of the learners will usually behave in disruptive manner when they have to sit for hours concentrating to its intricate message. In this literary work the writer tries to highlight the issue on the use of literary work, its’ possible solution and benefits to the learners. One of the ways is to provide simplified version or being tailored based on the students’ need which is certainly in need of the teacher’s great care in handling matter.
