Isi artikelA written test is broadly used as a form of summative assessment for any subjects at schools. An oral assessment tends to be neglected by teachers or test developers. It is because the oral test is considered to be less practical without considering the benefit it can give to the students. In the school where this study takes place, a summative assessment is conducted in both oral and written forms. Since this kind of summative assessment is rarely conducted, this study is trying to investigate new students’ perceptions toward oral and written tests. 50 tenth-grade students are involved in this study. A descriptive study is implemented to find out what the students’ perceptions toward oral and written tests are. A questionnaire is used to gather the data and then the students’ results of both oral and written test are compared to see how their perception affects their performance. The questionnarie consists of two parts; the first is direct comparison between oral and written test and the second is investigation of students’ perception towards oral and written tests in the form of Likert scale. The result shows that the students have positive perception of both oral and written tests in different dimensions: anxiety, familiarity, time allotment, reflecting truer knowledge, examiner participation, academic dishonesty, and correcting mistake. It also proves that the students prepared themselves better for the oral test becaue of anxiety. It is suggested to conduct oral test in summative assessment.
