Isi artikel
The purpose of this paper is to investigate lexical density in the written passages of the English textbook used by first year students of senior high school. The researchers are interested in doing this analysis as a critic and suggestion toward the first edition of English textbook used in the implementation of 2013 curriculum. The result of this analysis is expected to be a useful contribution for the betterment and perfection of the next edition of the book. The researchers do the analysis of the English textbook by describing the lexical density connected with the text readability. Adopting a nonrandom purposive sampling, the researchers select 8 written passages found in the textbook. The researchers describe the chosen data and analyze them based on Halliday’s theory of lexical density and Flesch’s reading ease scale. From the finding, the researchers find 8 lexical density of English written passages which have different result. Four of the eight written passages have appropriate level of readability for senior high school students. However, three of written passages have quite high level of readability which may cause difficulty for students to understand the content of them. In addition, one of the written passages which is categorized as standard is also less appropriate since it may be too easy for senior high school students to comprehend. Therefore, the researchers suggest that the next edition of the English textbook for first year students of senior high school should get more attention in the selection of the texts or written passages to be presented in the textbook.
