Isi artikelIt is stated that many teachers avoid the implementation of speaking test, or if any, they might be confused. This situation might be by virtue of difficulty in conducting the test leading to bias judgment in scoring speaking performance. The bias judgment might be influenced by how teachers perceive the rating scale used as well. In accordance with the issue, this study aims at investigating teachers’ perception towards two rating scales—a performance data driven scale (analytical scale) and a rating checklist scale (holistic scale), and subjectivity factors influencing in scoring speaking performance. This study involves four teachers of senior high school in Bandung. The questionnaire and interview are used to collect necessary information towards the investigated issue, which is speaking test. The data from those instruments are coded and analyzed descriptively. The findings reveal that teachers perceive differently on the performance data-driven scale, while the homogenous attitudes towards the rating checklist scale can be portrayed. Moreover, it seems that there are several factors influencing teachers’ subjectivity in marking students’ speaking scores—socio-cultural, accent, the way of expressing idea and communication style. Further research on different perspective with more representative sample is recommended.
