People as human beings cannot live alone because they need somebody else to complement each other. They communicate as a basic need through the language as a tool. People share knowledge and information. Additionally, people express their feeling either good or bad. However, people should consider politeness when interacting in order to avoid the conflict. Therefore, the interlocutor tries to soften the utterances to sound polite and protect other’s face. Brown and Levinson (1978) break down the face into two types which are positive face and negative face. Positive face is the want of human being to be desired, liked, or accepted in one community. In contrast, negative face is the want of human not being to be imposed or freedom from the action. Thus, both faces need to be maintained or protected. Complaint according to Trosborg (1995) is the expression of the negative feeling or disapproval. The aim of this study is to investigate what kinds of complaint strategies and complaint modifications were produced by male and female learners. The data of this study are obtained from Indonesian 25 males and 25 females of STBA LIA’s students Jakarta by filling in the DCT (Discourse Completion Test) form which consists of nine different scenarios. The results of this study show that both groups of learners tend to employ quite similar strategies. In terms of complaint strategies, male and female students prefer employing the modified blames. Yet, female learners produce more modified blames compared to male learners. Related to complaint modifications, male and female learners tend to upgrade their complaints. In addition, male and female learners prefer to produce the substantiations of the external modifications. Interestingly, the data obtained show that there are some learners producing more than one complaint modification types with low number of occurrences. The last results show some male and female learners prefer to be silent.
