English has been selected as the world’s global language therefore it is obvious that many parents from non-English speaking countries attempt to have their children acquiring English as early as possible. However, raising English bilingual children for non-native English speakers while living in their homeland, in particular for whom whose home countries treat English as a foreign language such as Indonesia, could be a challenge and would need a special language approach. This study explored family language policy of three native Indonesian families who have been successfully bringing up their children in English as their home language while living in Jakarta. The intention of the study is simply to reveal their language practices and the factors that promote these families choosing English as language of their family as this language practice is not the natural practices of families in the wider community. Through interviews and questionnaires to the parents and the children, the study was able to reveal how both languages were used in these families in which there were predominant usage of English and a very limited usage of Indonesian. Although all families admitted that they did not implement any conscious language policy nor specific strategy at home, the parents had made decision before the children were born to use English as the language they speak to their children, and also all parents have been exposing their children only to English environments. The children speak Indonesian only to their non-English speaking extended families for example to their grandma and cousins, and also to domestic staffs such as maids and drivers. The families have shifted their historical family language from Indonesian only to English Indonesian bilingual, however the third generation is potentially loosing their Indonesian and shift into English only speakers.
