One of the functions of language is as a communication tool. The process of communication between individuals in question here is the achievement of the desired message from the speaker to the listener is concerned. The aim of this research is to describe the choice of varieties in English language that taken by students of English Education Department along with the reason why they used it. This research is in the realm of linguistics, which aims to describe a wide selection of English used by students of English Education Department, University of Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) in Yogyakarta. The varieties of English willThe data taken is the choice of words, phrases, sentences, dialogue, and interviews in the form of oral speech (spoken text) or written language (written form) by using survey method. Language selection will be limited to the shape of the British and Americans. Once the data collection process is complete, researchers then conducted qualitative data analysis techniques. The process of data analysis is based on the selected shape by the respondent either in terms of choice of pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. The results of this study are researchers get an overview of the topic and the picture on a wide selection of English used by students majoring in English Education Department, University of Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) as follows: 1) There is two varieties of English that is controlled by PBI students, UAD, namely the English variety of British and American, 2) The selection of variety of English that was done by students of PBI is caused by several factors, including: a) factors of learning English that students get on the bench prior learning, namely junior and senior high school level that affect them in choosing a variety of English, b) familiarity and ease of pronunciation. Familiarity, simplicity, and similarities with the first language in pronunciation is a factor that cause students choose a variety of English language in the use of English that their daily use, and c) the effect of reading materials and input provided by lecturers in English language learning students who are currently running.
