Isi artikel
In late september 2000 the second "intifada" (popular uprising) broke out in the west bank and gaza strip (WBGS : also referred to as the occupied territories). These are the palestinian areas occupied by israel in the june 1967 war. Before that the west bank had been (since 1948) part of jordan, while the gaza strip had been under egyptioan administration. For several years these territories have been the subject of on - off negotiations between the palestinian national authority (PA) and the israeli government which it was widely assumed world culminate in the recognition of an independent palestinian state comrpising the bulk, if not the whole, of these areas.
