Isi artikelOne of the infectious diseases which cause morbidity and mortality in the developing countries, including Indonesia is diarrhea. Bacterial infection of Shigella sp or Vibrio sp is one factor that causes diarrhea. Rhizome of Zingiber zerumbet has been used traditionally as an ant diarrheal medication. This study is aimed to compare the effectiveness of antibacterial Z. zerumbet rhizome extract against S. dysenteriae and V. cholerae in vitro. This study used an experimental design and rhizome of Z. zerumbet which extracted by maceration technique. This study was using a diffusion method and Mueller Hinton Agar as a medium to see inhibition zone of bacterial growth around the paper disc. The results showed that the rhizome extract of Z. zerumbet with concentrations of 10%, 20%, 40%, 80%, 100% had average inhibition zone against S. dysenteriae growth respectively 0 mm, 0 mm, 0.30 mm, 1.05 mm, and 1.45 mm, whereas against V. cholerae growth had average inhibition zone respectively 0 mm, 0.20 mm, 1.20mm, 1.41 mm and 2.45 mm. The results of Mann-Whitney test showed that there were difference antibacterial effectiveness between rhizome extract of Z. zerumbet against S. dysenteriae and V cholerae at a concentration of 20%, 40%, 80%, and 100%. Compared with extracts of Z. zerumbet rhizomes, the average inhibition zone of cotrimoxazole was 25.44 mm or 17-84 times greater against S. dysenteriae and 35.23 mm or 14-176 times greater against V. cholerae. It can be concluded that the extract of the rhizomes of Z. zerumbet have efficacy in inhibiting the growth of S. dysenteriae and V. cholerae, but only has less capability compare to cotrimoxazole.
