Isi artikel
This study aims to describe: (1) types of semantic structures of math word problems for lower grades of the elementary school, and (2) sources of difficulties in comprehending word problems faced by the students in the rural areas. The data sources were mathematics textbooks for lower grade students. The informants were 821 students and 36 teachers in the rural areas in Sukoharjo, Karanganyar, Boyolali, and Klaten regencies. The data were collected through document analysis, interviews, and tests of word problem comprehension. The data were analyzed by the quantitative descriptive, analytical induction, constant comparative, and typological analysis techniques. The results of the study are as follows. First, the types of semantic structures comprise four signs of mathematical operations, i.e.: (a) addition, including: combination, unification, and comparison; (b) subtraction, including: permutation, separation, and comparison; (c) multiplication, including: multiplication, multiple, and equation; and (d) division, including: grouping, distribution, and equation. Second, the sources of students’ difficulties include: (a) words without antonyms as signs of the mathematical operations of addition and subtraction, (b) older/larger and younger/more phrases, and (c) the word sum.
