Isi artikelThis study aims to describe sufistic imagery of death and Islam in Indonesian poems. This was a qualitative descriptive study in which the data were collected through documentation and interviews. The data sources were poems by Abdul Hadi W.M., Sutardji Calzoum Bachri, and Kuntowijoyo. The data were analyzed by the descriptive and content analysis techniques. The results of the study are as follows. First, sufistic imagery of death describes: (a) something beautiful and horrible, (b) something like savings, and (c) a longing event. In addition, sufistic imagery of death uses minor imagery as its branch such as ‘place to lie down’, ‘cemetery’ ‘grave’ and ‘burying the dead’. Second, sufistic imagery of Islam describes: (a) Islam mixing with Hinduism, Buddhism, and other beliefs; (b) a mixture of Islam and mantras; and (c) a mixture of Islam and Javanese traditions. Branches of sufisticimagery of Islam include: Muhammad, Isa Almasih, Zen, “Q” (Quran), alif lam mim, suluk, and awang uwung.
