Isi artikelThe practice of teaching English as a foreign language in Indonesia as one of the developing countries is always interesting to be discussed. It is widely believed that the process of learning a foreign language needs to be conducted on the basis of the learners’ need and at the same time needs to meet the national curriculum. This phenomenon seems more interesting to be discussed particularly the one dealing with peculiar learners coming from SMK. Learners coming from this particular kind of high school tend to be considered as having the same need as those coming from common high schools. Indeed, this phenomenon need to be reconsidered owing to the fact that they may have their own reasons and needs of learning English, particularly those majoring in Arts. They need to learn English not only as a content subject but also as a means of understanding foreign culture and at the same maintaining their own culture. Therefore, it seems necessary to look closer on the practice of teaching English to SMK students in this country. Hence, this particular study tries to discuss the common practice of teaching English to this particular learners, particularly in terms of materials used and the significance of integrating cultural content in the practice of teaching English for SMK majoring in Arts.
