Isi artikel
This research, the first year of the three-year research projects funded by DIKTI, is meant to develop a model of genre-based translation from Indonesian into English. The present research objectives are to identify how translators transfer the factual genres of the source texts, including their prototipicalities, into the factual genres of the target texts. This research also investigates techniques, methods and ideology of translations applied in the proses of translation, and how the aspects affect the quality of translation. The findings indicate that techniques of translation such as established equivalent, borrowing, linguistic amplification, transposition, and reduction are used to realize the social function and text structure of the genres. As a consequence, communicative method and domestication ideology of translation that are close to refer to the target texts are explored to realize the social function, the text structure, and norms and values of the source texts, which result in high qualities of translation. This finding implies that the knowledge of genres and their prototipicalities as well as that of techniques, methods, and ideologies of translation will provide translators with significant knowledge prior to the process of translation.
