Isi artikelThe translation of tourism text is one of tourism service production involving cross –language between two-codesystems. In this regard, the Indonesian-English tourism translation text is one of the media to introduce a various wonderful destinations for tourism object in Indonesia. Numerous written texts in tourism translation such as brochures, leaflet, booklet, flyers, tourist guide book and pamphlet published by tourism agencies take the important role in promoting tourism destination especially to attract and persuade the visitors. However, many of Indonesian-English tourism translation texts mostly over-simplified on linguistic factors influenceing the strategy used in translation. Consequently, the terms“equivalence” or “faithfulness” from the source texttranslated into the target text is the most authoritative criteria to determine whether the translation is acceptable and successful or not. Since the growing need in translating non-literary text type supports to a general shift from predominantly linguistic translation theories to a more functional oriented concept of translation, the contextual factors surrounding the text should not be neglected. Therefore this paper aims to analysis the tourism translation text based on the perspective of ‘Functionalis’theory of translation. It specifies the decisive factors in the translation process wherein “one of the most important factors determining the purpose of a translation is the addressee” (Nord, 1997, p. 12). The data are taken from three different texts of Indonesian tourism article translated into English. This paper is an attempt to introduce functionalism approach in translating tourism article by highlighting some specific translation strategies and techniques in applying the theory into practice. The findings of this study is expected to provide translators with a new perspective of moving away from the static linguistic-typologies of translation.
