Isi artikelThis study is based on the premise that English and Indonesian do not always conceptualize objects, which follow the prepositions in the same way and that this accounts for some important differences in the ways that locative prepositions are translated in these two languages. This present study is conducted in the form of library research in which the data is in the form of English locative prepositional phrases with their Indonesian equivalents. The theories applied in this study are translation procedures, translation shift and the principals of translation. The method of presenting the data is using diagram tree and mathematical numbers to make it clear in term of data description. The results of the analysis shows that the translator has to consider different translation procedures, e.g. adaptation, borrowing, word-per-word or literal translation, etc in doing translation work. Translation shift in terms of unit shift, structure shift, intra-system shift and level shift is unavoidable to have the closest natural equivalence in the target language. The translation principal of loss and gain as well as skewing of information is unavoidable in the translation process.
