Isi artikelEvaluation is one of the important parts of any educational system since it attempts to discover level of competence achieved by students in teaching learning process. However, the assessment method in evaluating students’ translation performance has long been pre-occupied by analyzing the target text which tends to focus on the equivalent effect from source text into the target text. In consequence, the previous method of translation assessment is appropriate to determine whether the translation is successful but it will not work to measure students’ translation competence. This study concerns the evaluation of students’ competence in translating Indonesian expressive text into English since expressive text is considered as the the most difficult text-type to translate. The participants are three target students of STBA Pertiwi – Jakarta. They are requested to translate two pieces of Indonesian expressive text into English and Angelelli’s five-point-scale scoring rubric is applied to evaluate their translation work. The findings discover students’ translation competence based on four aspects of competency: linguistic competence; textual competence; pragmatic competence; and strategic competence. Having only one type of text and three participants wherein the population does not fully represented, the findings of this study can not be used to generalize the phenomenon in the entire community of translation class. Yet, this study is an attempt to put forward the instrument used in translation assessment and to offer an insight into a more objective and systematic evaluation of students’ translation using scoring rubric.
