Isi artikelIn the translation education context, the main issue is how to develop students’ translation competence. Translation competence consists of several interrelated sub competences, and one of them is extra linguistic competence. This paper is aimed at discussing students’ extra linguistic competence in translating an English text into Indonesian. Students’ extra linguistic competence is identified by looking at their extra linguistic problems in translation and how they deal with these problems. Extra linguistic problems related to the students’ problems in understanding culturally bound terms in the source text and translating these terms in the target language. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research consists of students’ translation work and students’ responses to the questionnaires and interviews. Students are asked to translate an English text about Australian life into Indonesian. A set of questionnaires are also used to assess students’ problems during translation and how they dealt with their translation problems. The results show that most of the students have problems in translating terms related to source text’s culture appropriately into Indonesian. The cultural related terms found in the source language text include the terms used in geographical references, sporting terms, food and drink references, relationship terms and class terms. The students have applied different strategies in dealing with these terms, therefore they translate the same terms quite differently into Indonesian. However, some of them successfully translate these terms by applying appropriate strategies. The students’ translation of culturally bound terms also indicates that extra linguistic and linguistic problems often go together. Sometimes students’ linguistic problems such as problem to understand a word function and English construction causes them to have extra linguistic problems. How the students dealt with culturally bound terms in translation also reflects the range of their extra linguistic competence.
