Isi artikelThis analysis aims at analyzing the problems in neologism and its possible strategies conducted by the translators. The challenge brought by neologism will undeniably pose problems to the translator in translating them from their SL to TL primarily due to the absence of their equivalent or their specific equivalent, although the concept might have been long known by the TL reader. Based on the analysis, it was found that the translators mostly translate the SL words into the more generally accepted terms as well as substitute them into the more commonly accepted cultural concept in TL readership. However, the solution taken by the translator is found not always the effective since most of the respondents are found to be more familiar with the borrowed words. The questionnaire taken from 10 respondents shows their preference in using the newly coined terms in their SL instead of the localized term (TL), e.g. the word “emoticon” is more popular than “ikon emosi”, “mouse” is more popular than the so called TL “tetikus”. Besides being determined by several factors e.g. media coverage, linguists, or translator’ effort in promoting those words into society, above all, it is the reader/society who is primarily the one determining whether or not the words will be popular or perish in the future, and not just “the fabricated coinage” created by the linguists or translators,.
