The landscape architecture profession is rapidly growing around the globe. Landscape architects are being called upon to play a critical role in improving the quality of people’s lives through sustainable design. These are designs that meet human needs, while protecting important natural and cultural resources. As educators we are the gate keepers of knowledge, it is our responsibility to make sure that the education of landscape architects is adequate to meet this challenge. This author examines the theoretical basis of sustainable design and concludes the traditional approach to teaching design studio is not adequate for teaching sustainable design. The author examines educational theory and makes recommendations for teaching sustainable landscape architecture design studios.
