Social media has revolutionized the spread of information and at the same time, empowers the users to have more flexibility in communication. The widespread use of social media is not without its fair share of negative impact on some users, especially the young users. In the extreme cases, the adverse effects may result in emotional turmoil and even deaths. Some of these examples include, cyber-bullying and online cult, which promotes or even organizes dangerous activities. All these have raised our concern about Cyber Wellness among the Internet users. Cyber wellness, according to Singapore’s Media Development Authority (MDA), refers to the positive well-being of Internet users and a healthy cyber culture for the Internet community. Savvy Internet users are able to detect harmful online activities, and know how to protect themselves and others from these activities. For years, MDA has worked with various groups, such as Cyber Wellness Steering Committee (ICSC) and Internet and Media Advisory Committee (INMAC), to raise awareness of cyber wellness through a range of outreach and educational initiatives. However, with the increasingly heavy use of social media among youths, would the existing cyber wellness campaigns still be relevant? This paper examines the correlation between use of social media and the youths’ cyber wellness. More specifically, it focuses on checking whether the use of social media would result in problematic online behavior among youths, as claimed by some local politicians and media.
