Mathematics is a compulsory subject for all primary and post-primary school students in Nigeria, as indicated in the National Policy on Education (NPE, 2004). The importance of mathematics is explained by its inclusion as a pre-requisite for admission for training in all science-based tertiary education programmes in the country and for purposes of employment (Iyekekpolor and Bulus, 2009). As a matter of fact, Ukeje (1997) in Ikekekpolor and Bulus (2009) described mathematics and mathematics education as a categorical imperative for any nation with focused scientific and technological aspirations. Deductively, therefore, any nation that treats mathematics education of her youth with levity does so at her own scientific and technological peril. Mathematics is the backbone of all scientific and technological investigations and all activities of human developments. It is the only language and culture common to all studies (Harbourpeters, 2000). In fact Obodo (2002) revealed that the study of mathematics is a basic preparation for informed citizenry and a gateway into numerous career choices in life. According to Kurumeh (2006) the only route to enter effectively into the modern world is functioning through mathematical knowledge because it has much to offer in solving problem of mankind in everyday life. In the words of Soyemi (2003) everybody solves and uses mathematics in one- way or the other. For example, the driver on the steering, the cook in the kitchen, the trader in the market and the farmer in his farm. Mathematics has continued to play a significant role in the development of any society.
