Isi artikelTest fairness is an important issue in test development. Item bias, also known as Differential Item Functioning (DIF), occurs when an item has characteristics that result in differential performance by individuals that are of the same ability level but belong to different groups defined by a characteristic extraneous to the testing process such as gender or ethnicity. This study investigated DIF with respect to gender (male reference group vs. female focal group) using Mantel-Haenszel (M-H) procedure. Data were collected from a total of 427 16-year-old students (male: 241; female: 186). Analysis of the results showed that only 4 out of 50 items (8%) were flagged as displaying DIF (a=0.05) between genders. The items in question were then reviewed by a panel of experts to identify possible explanations for their having been flagged. Findings and implications are discussed.
