Isi artikelAcademic discourses, scholarly publications and practices in the fields of development and its sustainability have been assumed to be largely dependent on the West and its concepts and models of ‘governance’, ‘good governance’, and ‘global governance’. But Asians/Orientals, Indians in specific, proudly find that these concepts and models of governance as well as its patterns and indicators are not entirely a Western phenomenon and not an absolute Western scholastic and practical invention and monopoly. The question of governance had found prominence in Asian/Oriental scholastic works and practices on society, polity/politics/state and government during times immemorial, ancient India in particular. For an in-depth understanding of the Asian/Oriental concept(s) and practice(s) of governance, it is imperative to trace their historical roots or origins. In this respect, Kautilya’s Arthashastra or Arthasástra would prove to be an essential departure or basis with very contemporary theoretical and realworld relevance.
