During this era of globalization, cross-cultural communication is bound to happen. Translation can be categorized as a form of cross-cultural communication since it concerns with the transfer of one language or culture into another language or culture. According to Larson (1984: 9-10), in the process of translation, translators as a bridge between the source text and target text should prioritize the transfer of meaning from source text into target text instead of focusing on the structural forms. However, in reality, there are so many translation works which put higher consideration towards the form and thus, ignoring the meaning. The pragmatics in source text is not transferred in the target text, which results in pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic failures. Based on the reasoning, the writer would like to conduct a research which aims to describe and analyze the pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic failures in the translation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles. The research would be conducted by comparing the original text and its translation in Indonesian. In the process, problematic and erroneous parts in the translation, which contain pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic failures, would be selected and analyzed further by using theories of translation and pragmatic studies.
