The objectives of this study are (1) to implement the K-W-L strategy in teaching reading descriptive text to the second grade students of junior high school and (2) to find out the extent of student’s improvement in reading descriptive text. This research was conducted at second grade of SMP KahuripanLembang consisted of 35 students. This research used qualitative method. Classroom action research was chosen as a research design of this study. It was conducted in three cycles. The data were obtained from several instruments including: observation form, field notes, questionnaire form and reading test in the form of multiple choice consisted of ten questions. The research findings showed that Know – Want to Know – Learned strategy was successfully implemented to the second grade students. It was confirmed by several improvements including: (1) the students could understand the definition, social function, generic structure, and grammatical features of descriptive text, tenses and pronouns used in descriptive text and they could add new vocabularies. (2) the students’ scores improved from cycle 1 to cycle 3. It was shown by the average score of each cycle. The average score of the first cycle was 62.28, the second cycle was 70.28 and the third cycle was 75.14 categorized “average to good”. (3) the students got improvements in several categories including: (a) the students could interpret the meaning of the word/phrase, (b) the students could identify the detailed information contained in the text and (c) the students could identify the implied information from the text.
