Grammar teaching has always been a matter of concern within the domain of language pedagogy. One major concern has something to do with which approach to grammar teaching is to be adopted. The approach, whether prescriptivism or descriptivism, by which grammar is taught to learners may be considered as one of those controversies that remain hotly disputed in the prevailing English language teaching. Those practitioners of the prescriptive approach to grammar take the view that there are subjective assessments as to what is correct and incorrect in employing English as a means of communication. By contrast, the adherents of descriptivism maintain that grammar taught to learners should describe and account for what transpires in reality. With a view that grammar teaching is required in the context of language teacher education programs, this study attempts to show that the descriptive approach to grammar benefits teacher-to-be learners more than the prescriptive one. It is not the authors’ intention to argue against the usefulness of grammar teaching using the prescriptive approach to language learners in general. The arguments in favor of teaching grammar using the descriptive approach in language teacher education programs derive from a number of cases in which most linguists and teacher educators have reached a consensus that the usefulness of teaching grammar using the descriptive approach has without doubt outweighed that of teaching grammar using the prescriptive approach.
