Isi artikelSociolinguistically, speech patterns of particular people or groups are associated with the social construction around them. As a minority group, homosexuals or gays defy the conventional social construction. This defiance leads into a variety of gay language they produce. Some aspects which might take a substantial role in the variety of gay language are sexuality, identity, femininity, and masculinity. This research intends to find out factors influencing gay language. It focuses on spoken language of 10 gay males in Malang as research subjects. They will have a natural daily conversation and will be recorded in order to analyse (a) its spoken features: tone, intonation, and stress, (b) its speech style: lexical choice and code-switching; and (c) its communicative purposes. The use of emotive sense in speech is commonly observed, for example, “Mainset orang Indo masih jadi karyawan ya? Pantes banyak pengangguran” or another example, “Sakitnya tuh disini mas, gendang telinga saya! Masa ngamen lengkap banget gendangnya, nyanyi sorak-sorak gitu pula!”. Preliminary findings of this research show that primary influences on gay language come from sexuality and femininity rather than masculinity as a gender-appropriate standard for male identity.
