Isi artikel
Swear words (or taboo words, taboo language, curse words, profanity or profane words) are “the lexicon of offensive emotional language” (Jay 2009, p. 153). Swear words have been practiced since long time ago, and in the past, the usage of swear words in society was frowned upon, especially if the utterers are females. However, recently, due to the influence of mass media, Kaye and Sapolski (as cited in Cressman, Callister, Robinson, & Near 2009, p. 117) state that swear words have actually lost their status as taboo practice, and they have been used quite often by both males and females nowadays. However, this occurrence contradicts the statements by Lakoff (1975) and Holmes (1992) which assert that women are expected to be polite, and they tend to avoid swearing or using taboo language. This contradiction shows that there is a possible shift in women’s language. Several studies conducted in 1960s to 1990s suggest that it is male who swears more compared to female. However, the research conducted in the 2000s claim that either women swear as much as men or women swear more than men. Therefore, this research aims to find out whether it is the male or female respondents that swear more by comparing one male and one female’s usage of swear words on Twitter. This research is a case study and will be conducted by transcribing and calculating respondents’ swear words for a period of one month. In the end, the researchers expect that the old assumption that men swear more than women is not proven through this research.
