Isi artikel
The contemporary Austrian writer Arno Geiger, born in 1968 in Bregenz, Austria, has been a freelance writer since 1993. His reputation greatly increased after the publication of his novel about the remembrance of the past in the family memories Es geht uns gut (published in 2005), Alles über Sally (published five years later in 2010), and his autobiographical novel Der König in seinem Exil (published in 2011). In his works he creates characters who have experienced intrusions upon their everyday lives, which they try to face with not only a more mature understanding but also compassion. This study analyzes and interprets Geiger's autobiographical novel, Der alte König in seinem Exil (2011), a book about his demented father and how the father reflects the family's past and his immature behavior towards his own father. It is also a process of growing up for the writer to learn what it means to be human and how important it is to respect the dignity and character of demented and aging people. This study first provides a brief introduction to the writer and explains why Der alte König in seinem Exil is a book that provides hope for a lifetime. Secondly, it focuses on the remembrance of the family's forgotten past and seeks to explain how the writer, through that family history, explores the meaning of life and an understanding of his demented father. Thirdly, the study asks how Geiger's relationship with his demented father innovates a more humane way of dealing with people in need, thus appealing to the public to show more respect and care for the human person.
