Isi artikelI promessi sposi and Ernii yingxiong zhuan, a 19th century Chinese novel, present a number of startling similarities owing to the use the two writers make of what may be called triadic structure. This is a particular narrative technique in which the diegesis is arranged in three key roles, namely an original author who wrote the work in a relatively distant past, a narrator who revises the wording and an internal reader who intervenes, either directly or indirectly, to comment on the text, thus serving the interests of a possible public of readers. By comparing the various ways in which the narrator intrudes on the narrative plot, his way of relating to the original author and his interaction with the reader, I will try to show how the basic setup of the two novels mentioned above, which may appear very similar at first glance, actually presents substantial differences. Said differences are essentially due to the different historical and cultural contexts in which the two writers worked.
