This study was conducted to determine the most efficient and cost-effective commercially and readily available means of reducing hand-arm vibration exposure in the operation of locally made lowland hand tractors in the CALABRAZON Region of the Philippines. Specifically, it focuses on the reduction of hand-arm vibration forces in the UPLB anthropometrically redesigned hand-tractors used in the preparation of lowland fields in the Philippine setting to at most 5 m/s2, which is the exposure limit value for 8-hour operation period. An investigation is being conducted to determine the vibration forces experienced in the lowland operation (specifically plowing and rota-tilling) of the modified hand-tractor to serve as a baseline reference for comparison of the effectiveness of vibration dampening controls. Commercially available dampening devices to be tested and characterized include: several handle grips of various designs, several types of engine mounts, and elastomer dampeners. The parameters to be studied include the vibration accelerations at three axes and hand-arm transmissibility. Design of experiment shall be used in order to determine the combination of the most cost-effective vibration dampeners/isolators that will result in the design of a hand-tractor frame with the least hand-arm vibration transmission to the tractor operator. This is necessary to reduce the over-all magnitude of hand-arm vibration exposure to minimize safety and health problems and diminish the stress in performing the lowland field preparation.
