Isi artikelMixed-model assembly line is utilized to assemble many product variants on a single line in automobile and other industries. In JIT (just in time) production system, the autonomation (jidoka) allows workers to stop a conveyor line whenever they fail to complete their assembly operation within a predetermined assembly time. Given this situation, it becomes important to determine the production sequence to minimize the total conveyor stoppage time. In the mixed-model sequencing problem, utility work minimization and work load smoothing have been utilized as objective functions by many researchers to reduce the risk of the line stoppage since the utility work and work load fluctuation are relatively easier to evaluate than line stoppage time. The purpose of this research is to discuss the lack of effectiveness of the utility work minimization and work load smoothing as alternative objective functions to the line stoppage timeminimization through numerical examples, and propose a theoreticalrelationship between the utility work and the line stoppage time. The paper proposes a new objective function of the problem based on the utility work to reduce the line stoppage time. The effectiveness of the proposed objective function as an alternative to the line stoppage timeis evaluated by numerical examples.
