Isi artikel
Inventory management for end-of-life spare parts is a pillar problem for after-sales services of complex products. This spare part problem is distinct from inventory replenishment problems of finished goods or parts. This paper is based on a case study of the spare part problemin the automobile industry. It presents analysis results ofan installed base methodfordemand forecast for spare parts and shows that the proposed method is better than a current method used in practice. There are two important findings. One, direction regression on historical requirements data does not produce good forecasts as compared to the installed base approach. Second, the recency of demand data is more useful than the quantity of historical datafor demand forecast. A new method is proposed based on these two findings and is shown to improve a current method by 15.9% in absolute forecast errors on tested part types.
