Spares or service parts management is defined as a strategic approach to ensuring the availability of parts for replacement for any anticipated or unanticipated downtime of an equipment due to the failure of a part or parts. One of the most critical issues with parts management is the variable pattern of spares inventory within the repair and replenishment network resulting to undesirable level of inventory when the equipment being supported reaches its end of life. This paper focuses on investigating the presence of an equipment lifecycle for a growing adaptors of the equipment in a given semiconductor industry. The life cycle pattern of equipment adaptation affects the management of spares inventory. The spares inventory behaviour is modelled using system dynamics (SD) by capturing the dynamic nature of a repair and replenishment network, which is responsible for maintaining the availability of spares inventory. A close loop repair and replenishment network is modelled using SD where its objective is to ensure the availability of spares that are used to instantaneously fulfil any spares failure. The following parameters such as part failure rate, return rate of parts from a set of equipment users, scrap rates, and parts and equipment retirement rates are adapted into the SD model. Finally, spares inventory acquisition policies are tested in order to determine how to dampen the variability of spares inventory and lessen the level of spares inventory at the end of equipment life.
