Talented people who can analyze problems are needed to produce new value in our globalizing society. This study aims to develop methods and tools that can help students grasp exact customer needs and draw up effective answers. The author focuses on an excellent student as a model for problem solving guidance. The student was required to enter a planning contest. The student then investigated companies and analyzed products, and with the authors’ guidance, was able to create a highly coherent plan to suit the contest requirements. The know-how acquired from this case was used to develop a methodology for training freshman project teams. The training improved the problem analysis skills of several project members, but improving overall team performance is the next stage of the challenge.
